27th April 2008

Canvey Island 2 Enfield Town 0
Ryman League Division One North

Town lost out in a hard fought game at Canvey yesterday. It could all have been so different had Mel Capelton not saved well from Andrew West, tipping wide what looked like a sure-fire own-goal, or if Town had been given a penalty when West clearly pulled back Ozie Foster in the area with the score at 0-0. They also had to thank Clydie Roberts for a goal-line clearance when the usually dependable Capelton flapped and missed at a corner. Admittedly, Jason Willis had already pulled off the save of the season in the opening minutes! It all went wrong in the second half as Leon Gordon and Ian Luck found the back of the net. Lee Smith came on in the second half to play his first game for the first team in over a year.

Photos from the game are now, or will shortly be on Flickr. REPORT to follow.

Enfield Town FC Management Team

Enfield Town Football Club are pleased to confirm the appointment of Stewart Margolis as Manager of the football club on a permanent basis. Also confirmed is the position of Mike Smee as Head Coach of the whole club. Following recent results the pair have more than proved their abilities and have been given the task of taking the club into next season. The pair can now prepare for next season with confidence and plan accordingly.

Their first decision has been to bring in Adam Lee as Joint Manager to assist in first team affairs. Adam, a former manager at Wingate & Finchley, has been working informally with the pair in recent weeks and this completes the management team for next season.

Enfield Town are confident this will move the club forward and they can mount a serious promotion challenge next season.

Canvey's drop into the Isthmian League is well documented and we travelled there in November 2006 for our away league game in monsoon conditions. Canvey had made the expected bright start to their league programme and we expected a tough game. We made life difficult for ourselves with a listless performance and gifted them two goals. True we could have had a penalty at a crucial time but to be fair they deserved their win and our real bright spot was Ricci Crace's excellent effort. 393 were there.

The return game, in March 2007, coincided with the return to winter weather and 242 saw us win ugly! The only goal came from Owusu Afriyie with a stunning shot just before the break. We didn't play well to be honest but the three points cemented our third place spot. Jerome John was man of the match without having a direct shot to save – it was that kind of game!!

The next time we met, at Goldsdown Road in November 2007, we started brightly, shading the first half and hitting the post through Rudi Hall, but Ryan Edgar's viciously swerving shot gave Canvey a half-time lead. Canvey doubled the lead in the second half and could have added to their goals but 2-0 it finished. Town gave debuts to Malcolm Dannie and Damien Yoxall. 253 were there.

Jamie Nay
by Jim Cunneen

Jamie has decided to return North…

Jamie joined us in March 2007 and made his debut in our Isthmian League game against Bury Town in our 2-1 away win. He came on as a substitute.

Jamie made 42 competitive appearences but never scored. He did miss a penalty for us in our 1-0 away win at Edgware in January. He also played in 6 friendlies.

Jamie was TOTE Man of the Match once. He was booked 6 times and sent off against Tilbury in our 3-2 away win in October 2007.

We are sorry to see Jamie go and wish him all the best for the future.

Enfield Town Res 4 St Albans City Res 1
Capital League

Town completed the double over St Albans this season although our visitors played some very nice football in spells and perhaps the score was a bit flattering. Jamie Nay captained the side on what was his last game for Town as he is moving back up north. We would like to thank Jamie for what he has done for the club since joining partway through last season. He was the first player to have a long spell in the first team having contacted us asking for a trial through the club web site.

As for the game, Jack Sawyer opened the scoring after Billy Healey had hit the post. Billy Healey flicked in a header for the second following some excellent work from Darren Grieves. Darren Grieves scored the other two goals – his second with his left foot! We also witnessed an accomplished display from U16 goalkeeper Andrew Prutton, who pulled off an exceptional save late in the game to keep Town well in the lead. Other debutants last night were Nathan Farrell and Reis Field.

Photos from the game are now, or will shortly be on Flickr. REPORT to follow.

Town emphatically confirmed a second place finish in this season's Capital League tonight, scoring seven in a game for the fourth time. Lee Smith opened the scoring with a lob reminiscent of Noel Ashford at his best. Luke Marshall was brought down for a penalty. David Allen saw his spot kick saved but Manny Sackey followed up to double the score. Town's other goals came from Ricci Crace and Darren Grieves who scored two apiece, and Jack Sawyer. Ricci is now top scorer for both the first and reserves teams.

Photos from the game are now, or will shortly be, on Flickr. REPORT to follow. Please note you may have to wait for the photos from Saturday and tonight as I have a lot to go through and have not had the chance to do so yet.

20th April 2008

Enfield Town 0 Waltham Forest 3
Ryman League Division One North

Town's unbeaten run came to an end as the wheels fell off rather spectacularly at Goldsdown Road yesterday. Despite having the best of the first half we were unable to turn possession into goals and went in 1-0 down. The second half belonged to the visitors and Town's day got worse when Glenn Harvey was sent off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity and Andy Jones followed him when he picked up a second yellow for dissent. Rudi Hall
by Jim Cunneen

Rudi became the 4th member of the 200 club at Sudbury on Tuesday.

Rudi made his debut in the abandoned game against Leyton in January 2002 in the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy game and although that game doesn't count as as an appearence he was actually booked – which did count! Rudi has made his 200 appearences in three separate spells for the club. He has become a real success for us being highly consistent, our regular penalty taker and the second highest 'assister' behind Matty Negus. He also has a highly competitive streak which has led to a darker disciplinary record. Take that away from him however and he would not be the player he is. Here are the stats:

                                  Apps goals (pens)
ESL 43 17 5
Southern League 37 23 14
Isthmian League 58 21 9
FA Cup 14 5 3
FA Trophy 5 2 2
FA Vase 7 1
Cherry Red Books Trophy 2 1
Middlesex Senior Cup 6 3 3
Middlesex Charity Cup 11 1
Essex Snr League Cup 15 2
Isthmian League Cup 1
Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy 1

Rudi has scored 76 goals – 37 of which are penalties, and is the club's leading scorer. He has contributed 81 assists as well and is the clubs leading 'assister'.

Unfortunately he has been sent off 6 times and booked 61 times and has the worst record in the club's history.

He has also played in 18 friendlies and scored 2 goals in these.

Not surprisingly Rudi has been voted Supporters Player of the year and JETS player of the year twice. He was also leading goalscorer in 2005-06 as well as being given the Player's player and Manager's player!

On top of that he has been credited with 20 MOM awards.

Well done Rudi!

Enfield Town vs Waltham Forest
Ryman League Division One North

On Saturday we host Waltham Forest in our last home game of the season. Kick off is at 3.00pm. Our visitors haven't had the best of times just recently but that is no reason to be complacent. As it is the last home game, it would be good to see a lot of the faces who have gone AWOL as the season has gone on. Leave your car at home and you can enjoy a drink or two in the bar as well. Our home game, in September 05, was moved to a Friday evening and an impressive gate of 387 turned up to watch. The first half was even and could have gone either way but Town started to put the visitors under pressure in the second period. Dean Green was eventually pulled to the ground after 70 minutes and Rudi Hall confidently put away the spot kick. Forest came back at us and it took an injury time goal from Dean Nyman (who scored from a ridiculous angle) to secure all three points. The return game, in February, was a physical encounter in which Forest had four booked, we had three. They had two players sent off late in the game as well. The game finished very late as they had a player stretchered off and then Kojo Ofori had to be taken to hospital with concussion. Anyway we ended a dreadful period (five games without a win) thanks to a goal after 76 minutes from Rudi Hall. 165 were there as yet another club had their best attendence of the season with us paying them a visit.

187 saw us lose 0-2 in our visit to Forest for the Isthmian League game in November 2006. Frankly we didn't play in this game. Very few chances were created and we squandered the best of those when Dean Nyman missed from the spot when we were a goal down. A late second settled the tie. It was their turn to miss a penalty in the home game of January 2007. To be honest neither side deserved to win this torrid affair in which six players were booked and two sent off. Kevin Stephens was ours. 268 witnessed the "fun".

Fast forward almost exacty a year to this season and 138 saw us win 2-0 in what may be our last ever trip to Wadham Lodge. Forest had two players who subsequently turned out for the Town in Jason Willis, who stayed, and Michael Toner who decided his future lay elsewhere. The game was played in a gale which didn't help but Town made the most of it to lead through Michael Deane after Simon Tickner headed on a Steven Velandia free kick. Town had the wind against them in the second half, but Deane scored the second goal when he poached a tap-in after a Paul Campbell shot came back off a post. Kofi Nyamah was red carded for reacting to a stamp from Forest's Daniel Lodge, who also saw red.

Yesterday, before the game, we got the following message via the web site contact form…

Good luck tonight against Sudbury. You will have over 1000 Dartford supporters urging you on.
I really enjoyed our visit to your ground, the last time you lost i believe, keep it up !!!!!

No doubt the Dartford faithful will be joining the Towners in raising a glass to Ricci Crace and Andy Jones, whose goals brought Town back from a goal down to win the game and confirm Dartford's promotion. Photos from the game may turn up on Flickr. Not from me though because I couldn't get there. REPORT to follow.

Enfield Town Res 0 Harlow Town Res 4
Capital League

Earlier in the season the Harlow away game clashed with an FA Youth Cup game, so we had to field a side devoid of the youngsters and, as it was a strong side, we won. Tonight the tables were turned as our side mainly consisted of players from the U18s and U16s with a few older heads for a bit of experience. As could be expected Harlow took advantage as the youngsters faded and the scoreline probably flattered them for that reason, although they definitely deserved the win. The nearest Enfield Town got to a goal was when Anthony Stockman's free kick hit the post. Photos from the game are now, or will shortly be, on Flickr. REPORT to follow.

Our first meeting with Sudbury came in the FA Cup (2004) when we were still in the Essex Senior League. We were pitched into the toughest possible tie we could have got in the preliminary round but at least we were drawn at home. 391 turned up to see a magnificent performance from the Town who won 2-1 with goals from Lee Smith (A superb volley) and a penalty from Rudi Hall. Sudbury pulled one back with 5 minutes to go and things got very, very tense and they missed an open goal with the last kick but we were through. The Sudbury keeper, Dean Greygoose, was sent off after the final whistle for carrying his chat with the ref a little too far.

Sudbury were flying high when they came to us for a first ever league fixture in September 2006. 257 saw us draw 1-1 and fail to win at home game again! Ricci Crace gave us the lead after 30 minutes only for Sudbury to equalise just before half time. We had the better chances to win it near the end but overall a draw was a fair result in an excellent game. The return game, at the end of March saw us trying to cement our play off place and Sudbury trying to battle to get in there. Ricci Crace gave us the lead after 69 mins with a well taken goal and that seemed to be it until the 95th minute. That's when they equalised. 379 were there.

And so to the play offs and for the second time we lost at the semi final stage. A good even first half saw us fall behind after only 4 minutes only to level after 12. The second half was a bit of a disaster – a penalty after 51, and two more goals after 54 and 73 left us too much to do and a second for us with 17 minutes to go was only consolation. Ricci Crace scored both of ours in front of 414. Sudbury lost to Harlow on penalties in the final.

A crowd of 303 turned up on a blistering hot day at the end of August 2007 and saw a poor display by Town . A largely sterile first half from us saw Sudbury dominate. The second half was much the same until Sudbury scored in the 81st minute (direct from a free kick). Only then did we come alive and Jamie Nay had our only worthwhile shot hitting a post near the end. Charlie Hasler was man of the match for the second match running.

Arlesey Town 0 Enfield Town 1
Ryman League Division One North

Enfield Town returned with all three points from Arlesey thanks to a Ricci Crace goal. It could have been more but the normally reliable Luke Marshall missed when it seemed easier to score, although he was being pulled back by Arlesey's George Fowler at the time, David Bastian hit the bar and Rudi Hall came close with a free kick. Our hosts ended the game reduced to ten men when Martin Young was sent off following an injury to 'keeper Jason Willis. Photos from the game are now, or will shortly be, on Flickr. We first played Arlesey in a pre season friendly in July 2003 and came back on the wrong end of a 1-3 defeat with Stuart Snowden scoring our goal from the spot.

We travelled to Arlesey Town for our first competitive game in a Southern League match on new year's eve and a right ding dong game transpired. A goal down at half time we equalised through Lee Smith just after he came on as sub. Rudi Hall whacked in a penalty to put us one up only for them to come back again. Lee Smith scored his second for 3-2 but they thought they had equalised again only for the ref to disallow it, apparently for hand ball. So upset were they that they had a guy sent off and two dismissed from the bench for the consequential arguments before Steve Velandia settled it at the death with a special. Smithy got the MOM award and we went top.Arlesey will have been a tad miffed to have come out of it with nothing though. 298 witnessed the fun.

The return game, in February, saw us win 4-1. To be honest this was probably a bit flattering. Arlesey had already hit the woodwork before Boniek Forbes ran through to score on his debut. Rudi Hall struck a sublime free kick just after half time and then it all went severely pear shaped for Arlesey. Their keeper appeared to make a perfect save from a 1/1 with Bryan Hammatt but was sent off for his troubles before Rudi did the usual. To their credit Arlesey pulled one back only for sub John Morgan to polish it off in the last minute. 253 braved the bitterly cold win to see the fest.

Boxing Day 2006 – and they came to us for this post Christmas fest. Mathew Negus scored after only 16 secs (fastest in clubs history) and we should have had a hatful. Their cause was not helped by having a player sent off in the first half but it wasn't until the 87th minute that Ricci Crace wrapped up the points. 237 were there. The same attendence saw the away game. We fell behind after 24 minutes but Rudi Hall levelled for us after 29. We then took the lead after a Paul Campbell was headed home spectacularly by James Gray for mr og. Another Rudi Hall penalty put us 3-1 up and David Bastian wrapped up the win for a 4-1 scoreline. This guaranteed our play off place.

We travelled to Arlesey for a league cup tie in October and came home on the wrong end of a 4-0 beating. To be honest it wasn't as bad as the scoreline suggests. We had our chances. The game turned on a rash challenge from Kofi Nyamah that gave them a penalty and him a straight red. The penalty was missed but the handicap of ten men was too much. A massive 75 were present… A week later and they came to us in the league for another four-goal game, but this time the honours were even. Charlie Hasler saved a penalty with the game at 0-0 and Luke Marshall made his first team debut. Town's goals came from Paul Campbell and Bryan Hammatt in front of a crowd of 209.

End of Season Extravaganza

Rather than just having the Presentation Evening on Saturday 3rd May, there will also be a footie match in the afternoon and you can take part. It will cost you money, which will be split between ETFC Supporters Society and the Lymphoma Association.

The Middlesex FA web site is still showing the date for the game as 23rd April with a 7.45pm kick off but I have had it confirmed that that information is now incorrect.

Brentwood will have been more disappointed with the dropped points from yesterday's game, as it allowed Bury Town to leapfrog them into sixth place.

Enfield Town had Jason Willis to thank for a couple of excellent saves while at the other end Luke Marshall, Ricci Crace and Simon Tickner all came close. The game saw another youth teamer make his first team debut with James Ewington starting on the wing. This season we have seen four players follow Robbie Carroll from the youth set up into the first team: Max Mitchell, Luke Marshall, Freddy Dooling and now James.

Brentwood are no strangers to us as we played them regularly in our ESL days.

In our first season Brentwood travelled to us following our disastrous evening against Stansted, when we lost 0-3 to a hat trick of penalties, and they received the full backlash as we romped to a huge win. Jamie Morris got the club's 5th hat trick of the season, Daniel Clarke added another brace to his already impressive total, and John Ridout wrapped up the 6-0 win. 323 turned up as well to round off an unblemished afternoon.

What a different story the return game was in April! A tired end of season performance which was lacklustre to say the least saw us come away with a 1-1 draw and leave Leyton as champions. John Ridout scored the equalizer for us. Ronnie Watson got himself sent off in the last minute for foul and abusive language just to complete a largely unsatisfactory afternoon.

On a boiling hot day which typically saw the first day of 2002-03 season we travelled to Brentwood with a team shorn of some regulars through international duty and some through unavailability. In spite of this we came away with a cracking 3-0 win. Daniel Clarke gave us a first half lead doubled after the break by David Allen and Graeme Hall added a third at the death. A great start played out in front of 153. The return game, in February, started with Martin St Hilaire score the quickest goal in ETFC history – a mere 38 seconds had passed when he finished off a move. David Allen made it 2-0 after only 7 minutes and we went off the boil for a while.Brentwood pulled one back early in the second half before Daniel Clarke made it 3-1 after 65 minutes. Daniel Alleyne added numbers 4 and 5 around a second goal for the visitors. Bradley Poole hit a contender for goal of the season after 76 minutes and late on Tommy Morgan wrapped up the scoring. 7-2 if youv'e lost count! All this in front of 216. The scoreline was a bit harsh on Brentwood it just happened that everything we tried ended up in the back of the net.

In October 2003 Brentwood came to us when we were in a run that hadn't see us concede a goal in 4 league matches. That run continued with a routine 2-0 win. Billy Cove scored both goals to give him 3 goals in 2 starts and 241 watched. The return game in February '04 was anything but routine. Lee Smith gave us an early lead with a tap in before 'Wood equalised direct from a corner. They then went in front before Billy Cove equalised. The second half saw our defence stroll off for a while and Brentwood romped into a 5-2 lead. Just to add insult to injury Bradley Brotherton scored their 5th and saved John Ridout from the ignomony of being the only ET to score an OG. Jim brought on the aforementioned Ridout for his first appearance since October and what a difference he made! Cove reduced the arrears and John Ridout himself made it 4-5 with 7 minutes to go. With 5 left on the clock Clarkey was upended in the box and Stuart Snowden gave us a point. Exciting stuff but dropped points in our chase for the title.

Brentwood added Town to their name at the beginning of season 2004-05. For some daft reason we played Brentwood home and away in league games in three days in October 2004. In the first game, away on the Saturday, we dropped two points in an uninspiring 1-1 draw. It was a strange game where we had the greater possessiopn but they had the better chances. The fact that Andy Hall was man of the match says it all really. Dean Nyman scored for us from Matt Negus' corner and 141 were there. Enough said. In the second game, on the Tuesday, Matt Negus became the goalscorer in a hard fought 1-0 win. This was a much better all round performance as Brentwood came and sat behind the ball and proved difficult to break down – a job they did very well. The three points were vital and Matt's goal. on the hour, brought a collective sigh of relief. The attendence of 189 though was a disappointment.

Brentwood joined us in the Isthmian League this year and we travelled to them in October. They were undefeated and had only conceded 8 goals all season where as we had conceded 7 in our last 2 games. We came back with a 1-1 draw which was grimly satisfying. We were well organised and deserved our point. Our disciplinary record was beginning to cause concern though as Darren Grieves became the third Town player to see red in 3 games and we had another 3 booked. Ricci Crace scored for us after 35 and they equalised after 44. 224 were there.

Web site updates

I am having problems at the moment with updates having done something which makes it difficult for me to upload information to the web site. Hopefully I should be back up and running properly by the end of the weekend.

1st April 2008

Enfield Town Res 3 Ware Res 2
Capital League

Town came from two goals down to claim maximum points tonight and gain some revenge for the two defeats our visitors inflicted earlier in the campaign. Reece Wilson fired in the first from outside the area before two goals from Darren Grieves, the winner a penalty following a handball offence, won all three points. David Allen returned from his seasonal holiday (this time with Wingate & Finchley) to start his fourth spell with the club. Photos from the game are now, or will shortly be, on Flickr. REPORT to follow.
